ANCIENT   COUNTRIES   ...

The old medieval villages of the Marche Region are places of history and tradition, which remind us of a bucolic life in balance with the natural rhythms of seasons and in harmony with nature.

The "Borghi più belli d'Italia" organisation, which promotes Italy's most beautiful villages, lists 23 of them in the Marche.  18 flags wave in the hills : Cingoli, Corinaldo, Gradara, Grottammare, Mondavio, Mondolfo, Montecassiano, Montecosaro, Montefabbri, Montefiore dell'Aso, Montelupone, Moresco, Offagna, Offida, San Ginesio, Sassoferrato, Servigliano, Torre di Palme, and Treia; whereas 5 in the mountains: Frontino, Macerata Feltria, Monte Grimano, Sarnano, and Visso.

....ROCCHE AND   CASTLES

The term "marka", introduced by the Lombards, derives from the Germanic and means "border territories" of the Holy Roman Empire. The distance from the centre of the imperial power favoured the birth of the municipal autonomies that subsequently, between the fourteenth and the fifteenth century, generated the establishment of states and autonomous areas managed by families in constant struggle among them. These continuous infightings gave rise to the construction of Castles and Rocche  (fortresses) to defend the territories ruled by the different families, giving free rein to the architectural flair of the most famous military architects of that time. The families that governed the Marche in the territory of Pesaro and Urbino were the Montefeltro, the Malatesta, the Sforza and Della Rovere families. The Castles and Rocche in the Marche Region are about 420.
